What is Root Cause Analysis

Often times when a problem arises, the immediate reaction to it would be to do whatever it takes to make it go away as quickly as possible. Problems cause anxiety and disruption, and the human mind is wired to want to take the first and the fastest way out of it. This is the natural course of things. This is not the best way to deal with things. It is easy to put a fresh coat of paint on things and pretend that the problem never existed just because you cannot see underneath the paint. The truth is though, that the problem never went away, and will come back with a vengeance because it was not dealt with in an appropriate manner.

To counter this, and to make it easier on the people doing the problem solving, the root cause analysis method was developed. Through this, you look at a few set questions and queries which help you get to the root or the cause of the problem. Once you are able to identify where the problem is coming from, you can spend your resources on resolving the problem from the ground up. This is the only sure way to be certain that the problem is actually solved and not just being buried.

This is a relatively easy technique, for reference, you can look up a root cause analysis template which will guide you as to what questions you need to be asking and the areas that you need to look into. Once recognized, you move on to the next phase where you decide a course of action which will be best to tackle the specific situation. From there you implement the best possible solution and see if it is effective in eradicating the problem.
